Passive downdraught evaporative cooling systems using porous ceramic evaporators. development of key components (evapcool).

Objective

It is proposed to develop and test two new systems to promote Passive Downdraught Evaporative Cooling (PDEC) arising from direct and indirect evaporation through porous ceramic panels, and to compare the performance with conventional chilled water-cooling coils operating under negative buoyancy driven airflow. The proposal builds on previous work on PDEC and is intended to generate improved systems and components which overcome disadvantages associated with existing spray nozzles systems. The work will include the development of theoretical models, laboratory scale testing, architectural and engineering investigations and full-scale prototype testing of porous ceramic panel components, for integration in non-domestic buildings throughout Europe and other regions of the world.
