Development of a lead acid power source for hybrid electric vehicles

Objective

To reach future objectives on energy consumption and emissions attention recently shifted towards hybrid electric vehicles (HEV). Specific power needs for HEVs are more demanding than battery electric vehicles: a power-to-energy-ratio of 20-30 instead of 1 for BEVs. No low cost batteries are now available meeting this demands. Also there is a strong need for more electric power in vehicles: shifting from 12V to 36V, best served with a high specific power battery. Hence the main objective of this project is to develop a compact bi-polar lead acid battery for HEVs and Starter-Alternator applications, with a specific power of 600W/kg.

Further objectives are a weight reduction of 75% compared to conventional lead acid, a maximum (dis) charging time of 30 seconds during peak power, a life time of 5 years, an operation temperature of -15 to +40 degrees Celsius and a maximum price of 1500 Euro.
