EUROPEAN CLIMATE PRODUCED BY AN ATMOSPHERIC GENERAL CIRCULATION MODEL

Objective



IT IS PROPOSED TO STUDY THE EUROPEAN CLIMATE SIMULATED BY THE METEOROLOGICAL OFFICE'S 11-LAYER GENERAL CIRCULATION MODEL WITH PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON THE CHARACTER OF THE CLIMATE AT AND NEAR THE SURFACE. IT WILL BE TO NECESSARY TO DEVELOP TECHNIQUES TO DIAGNOSE THE MODELLED PROPERTIES OF INTEREST AND TO IDENTIFY SOURCE OF VALID DATA FOR VERIFYING THE MODEL'S RESULTS.
THE 11-LAYER AND OTHER NUMERICAL MODELS WILL BE USED TO DETERMINE THE SENSITIVITY OF MODELLED EUROPEAN CLIMATE TO CHANGES IN THE SPECIFICATION OF THE LAND SURFACE FORCING TERMS SUCH AS SOIL MOISTURE AVAILABILITY, SNOW COVER AND SURFACE ALBEDO. THIS PHASE WILL INVOLVE THE DESIGN, EXECUTION AND DETAILED ANALYSIS OF A SERIES OF GLOBAL RUNS FOR PERIODS OF RATHER MORE THAN A YEAR.
