THE INFLUENCE OF CO2 ON THE ATMOSPHERE IS LARGE IN THE UPPER STRATOSPHERE. SINCE 1958, ANALYSES OF THE TEMPERATURE AND HEIGHT FIELDS OF STRATOSPHERIC LEVELS ARE CARRIED OUT BY THE STRATOSPHERIC RESEARCH GROUP, INSTITUTE FOR METEOROLOGY, FREE UNIVERSITY BERLIN.
THEREFORE, A UNIQUE SERIES OF DATA IS AVAILABLE TO MONITOR TEMPERATURE TRENDS IN THE STRATOSPHERE. A FIRST INVESTIGATION OF LONG-TERM VARIATION SHOWS THAT THE HEIGHTS OF THE 30-MBAR LEVEL IN THE REGION BETWEEN 10 N AND 50 N DECREASED CONTINUOUSLY SINCE 1985, WHILE THE TEMPERATURE SHOW IRREGULAR FLUCTUATIONS.
IT IS PROPOSED HERE TO CONTINUE THE ANALYSIS OF STRATOSPHERIC HEIGHT AND TEMPERATURE FIELDS AND TO COMPLEMENT THE DATA SERIES FOR THE 10-MBAR LEVEL WHERE LARGE GAPS EXIST, BECAUSE THE MODEL COMPUTATIONS INDICATE THAT EFFECTS OF CO2 ON THE TEMPERATURE SHOULD BE TWICE AS LARGE AT THE 10MBAR LEVEL (30 KM) THAN AT THE 30-MBAR LEVEL (23 KM).
