CHEMICAL STUDIES OF MAIN ESTUARIES AND COASTAL AREAS OF GREECE

Objective

TO STUDY THE MECHANISMS OF MOBILISATION OF TRACE ENTERING THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT.

COVERING THE GAPS IN THE EXISTING KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAJOR ESTUARIES AND COASTAL AREAS OF GREECE, EIGHT SUCH AREAS WILL BE STUDIED IN TWO GROUPS OF FOUR. A PRELIMINARY SAMPLING FOLLOWED BY FOUR SEASONAL WATER SAMPLING, ESPECIALLY FOR SEA BOTTOM SEDIMENTS WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN EACH LOCALITY.

THE PROPOSED LOCALITIES ARE: THE GULF OF KAVALA, NESTOS ESTUARY, THE ESTUARY OF STRYMON RIVES, MALLIAKOS GULF AND THE ESTUARY OF SPERCHIOS RIVER, AMVRACIKOS GULF, ACHELOOS ESTUARY, SARONICOS GULF AND THE GULF OF HERACLEON (CRETE).

THE PARAMETERS TO BE MEASURED ARE: TEMPERATURE; SALINITY; TURBIDITY; PH; MAGNETIC SUSCEPTIBILITY; ISOTHERMAL REMANENT MAGNETISATION; SATURATION ISOTHERMAL REMANENT MAGNETISATION (SIRM); SUSPENDED SOLIDS; DISSOLVED OXYGEN; CHLOROPHYLL A; PHOSPHATES, NITRATES, NITRITES, AMMONIA, SILICATES; TRACE METALS (CU, ZN, NI, CO, MN, FE, PB, HG, AG, AU, CD, MO, V, AL) DISSOLVED IN THE SEA WATER, CONTAINED IN THE SUSPENDED SOLIDS AND RETAINED IN THE SEA BOTTOM SEDIMENTS; HYDROCARBONS AND POLYCHLORINATED HYDROCARBONS.
