GROUND WATER POLLUTION FROM WASTE DISPOSAL SITES. A CASE STUDY PROJECT

Objective

TO EVALUATE EXISTING METHODS AND TO DEVELOP AND TEST NEW METHODS AND THEORIES FOR MODELLING GROUND WATER POLLUTION FROM WASTE DISPOSAL SITES.

THE PROPOSED PROJECT IS DIVIDED INTO TWO PHASES WITH A DURATION OF EIGHT MONTHS AND THREE YEARS RESPECTIVELY. THE PRESENT PROPOSAL APPLIES TO THE FIRST PHASE ALONE. UPON COMPLETION OF THIS PHASE AN APPLICATION OF THE FOLLOWING AND MORE COMPREHENSIVE PHASE WILL BE SUBMITTED.

PHASE I INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES:

1) SELECTION OF SUITABLE DISPOSAL SITES FOR THE PROJECT

ON THE BASIS OF A THOROUGH ANALYSIS OF POSSIBLE DISPOSAL SITES, TWO SITES WILL BE SELECTED FOR THE PROJECT. THE SITES SHOULD BE TYPICAL IN TERMS OF HYDROGEOLOGICAL CONDITIONS AND WASTE COMPOSITION, AND FURTHER THEY SHOULD NOT THREATEN LARGER WATER SUPPLY WELLS THUS REQUIRING EXTENSIVE REMEDIAL ACTIONS DURING PROJECT PERIOD.

THIS ACTIVITY WILL FURTHER INCLUDE INVESTIGATIONS OF THE HISTORY AND THE PRESENT STATE OF THE SITES IN ORDER TO ASSESS THE LEACHATE FORMATION.

2) DATA COLLECTION, MATHEMATICAL MODELLING AND SUPPLEMENTARY FIELD INVESTIGATIONS

ALL EXISTING DATA WILL BE COLLECTED AND EVALUATED. ON THIS BASIS PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENTS OF THE HYDROGEOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL CONDITIONS WILL BE MADE.
CALIBRATION AND APPLICATION OF NUMERICAL CONTAMINANT TRANSPORT MODELS.
CALCULATIONS WILL BE CARRIED OUT WITH THE OBJECTIVES OF PREDICTING CONTAMINANT PLUME MIGRATION AND IDENTIFYING THE SUPPLEMENTARY FIELD INVESTIGATIONS. THESE INCLUDE A FEW WELL BORINGS AND WATER QUALITY ANALYSES.

3) PLANNING OF DETAILED PROGRAMMES FOR PHASE II

ON THE BASIS OF THE ANALYSES AND MODEL SIMULATIONS DESCRIBED ABOVE A DETAILED PROGRAMME WILL BE PLANNED FOR PHASE II OF THE PROJECT, WHICH INCLUDES THE MAIN BULK OF THE PROJECT. THIS PHASE WILL COMPRISE COMPREHENSIVE FIELD INVESTIGATIONS AS WELL AS A RESEARCH PROGRAMME OF INTERDISCIPLINARY NATURE.
