Objective The proposed research will cover chlorine or chlorine compounds free bleaching and will aim at proposing a clean solution to minimize or eliminate the use of chlorine compounds in the kraft pulps belaching, this solution being acceptable by the pulp industry.New bleaching sequences will be proposed. They will involve the use of the previous reagents except chlorine. Some of them have already shown their possibility to achieve complete belaching like OZEP (O: oxygen, Z : ozone, E : caustic soda, P : peroxide) but carbohydrate degradation will have to be minimized, according to the results obtained in the fundamental research. Some bleaching sequences with enzyme treatment will be investigated. The trials will be carried out with several unbleached pulps at different kappa numbers, classical kraft unbleached pulp, after extended delignification and oxygen post-delignification. Wood species: pine, spruce, eucalyptus. The most promising bleaching sequences will be tested at a pilot scale on the new pilot testing bench recently installed at CTP. This will allow a meaning full evaluation of technical and economical feasibility. For some bleached pulps, the characteristics will be determined and principally the strength properties, optical properties and particularly the brightness and the brightness reversion. Remaining impurities will be measured. The AOX content of the bleached pulps will be equally determined. The pollution load (COD, BOD, colour, suspended solids, chlorinated organic compounds) will be measured for some of the most promising bleaching sequences. The effort will be carried mainly on the toxicity tests.
