To increase the understanding of the dynamics and degradation
processes of Mediterranean ecosystems. To provide a model of
vegetation dynamics at a range of spatial and temporal scales
which can be used for evaluating the impact of changing climate
or of different land-use policies in these regions.
The study is based on the premise that the prevention and
reversal of desertification depends on an understanding of the
processes which determine vegetation structure as it is the plant
cover which protects the soil from erosion and determines
ecosystem function. This project will quantify the interactions
between the major components of Mediterranean vegetation and
produce a model to predict system behaviour at the landscape
level.
Vegetation patterns and ecological attributes of the main
character species in degrading and aggrading vegetation in
Mediterranean environments will be assessed. A modular modelling
approach will then be used to scale up from a dynamic,
time-dependent simulation of plant species behaviour to the level
of the landscape thus bridging the gap between species-level and
GIS-orientated models. The processes identified will be defined
and modelled in a way which complements other ongoing EC-RTD
projects at the regional scale. The model will respond to a
variety of disturbance regimes and its use will result in an
improved understanding of ecosystem disturbance and will provide
a basis for management prescriptions at the local and regional
scales.
The model will help the development and implementation of land
use policies throughout the Mediterranean region. It will also
be used as a means of planning effectively for the survival of
ecosystems and for reversal of desertification processes. A
reference point and database for relevant information will also
be established for the region.
