In-situ hybridisation in combination with flow-cytometry as a new tool in water quality control

Cel

Our institute is developing innovative methodologies from basic research in the applied field with special attention on phytoplankton research. The group has leading competence in the physiological characterisation of phytoplankton under different environmental conditions (light, nutrients etc.), even on a single cell basis by means of flow cytometry with subsequent cell sorting. The lack of molecular tools in competence of the group limits its ability to develop new tools for water quality research and basic research in the field of photosynthesis. The combination of molecular and physiological competences will allow to bridge the gap between the key parameters biodiversity of phytoplankton cells and their actual physiological activity. In future, this new knowledge will lead to reliable prediction instruments in ecosystem health.
