Chemiluminescence - a novel tool in paper conservation studies (PAPYLUM)

Exploitable results

The prototype instrument allows measurements of ultra-weak light emitted by degrading organic materials during oxidation at temeperatures close to ambient and in an atmosphere of defined humidity. It was developed to estimate the adequacy of paper conservation treatments for cultural heritage preservation, but it may be used for estimation of durability of other polymeric materials, of certain foods, pharmaceuticals, textiles, etc. At a more basic scientific level, it is particularly useful for elucidation of oxidative degradation mechanisms. Development of recipes of electrically conductive composites with the matrix of either polyolefins or rubber vulcanizates with electrical conductivity up to 1000 S/m. A possibility for the production of material with good processability for electro-conductive parts used in an aggressive and corrosive environment, e.g. electrodes, antistatic parts, electrical joints of complicated shape, etc. Lower price compared to imported products with similar properties.
Luminometer has almost a zero background signal and a long time stability of zero line. It is one of the most sensitive equipment types of its kind in the world. It enables to work in a defined atmosphere of oxygen or nitrogen under isothermal conditions or with the heating or cooling programs. Optionally it may be connected with an oxygen absorption instrument. Photon counting luminometer LUMIPOL measures the oxidation and thermo-oxidation stability of organic materials including polymers, food components, mineral oils and crude oil products. The instrument detects ultra-wear light emission accompanying the oxidation of organic materials. The more easily a material is oxidized, the more intense the light emitted.
