Source-specific ecosystem transfer of actinides utilising advanced technologies

Objectif

Knowledge of actinide behaviour in ecosystems is seriously lacking in radioecology. The project systematically compares the influence of source-term and ecosystem characterisation on the mobility and biovailability of actinides in terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems. This will provide fundamental information on mechanisms and key processes influencing actinide transfer, and subsequent implications for dose and impact assessment. Case study sites Palomares, Mayak, Trish Sea, Semipalatinsk and Chernobyl represent different source-terms and ecosystem characteristics. Advanced analytical techniques will be used to determine source-term characteristics, actinide transfer and bioavailability at the sites. These include state-of-the-art speciation methods and ultra low-level techniques for actinide levels and isotopic ratios measurements. A summary report and database directed at scientists, modellers and authorities will be provided.
