Unification of physical and clinical requirements for medical x-ray imaging and its relevance to European industrial and socio-economic development

Ziel

The proposal aims to develop the scientific underpinning of diagnostic radiology which is one of the most widely employed diagnostic techniques in health care. It would help to enable European manufacturers, who compete worldwide, to understand more fully the end users requirements. Similarly the European medical community and population at large would benefit from the use of x-ray imaging systems which would meet requirements included in the EC Medical Exposure Directive 97/43/EURATOM.The project tackles a pressing problem in the field of medical x-ray imaging, namely how to unify physical and clinical assessments of image quality so that the medical users and commercial manufacturers could more effectively define and implement future technological developments. This problem is now more relevant since new totally digital x-ray imaging systems are being developed for diagnostic radiography which at present accounts for some 70-80% of all diagnostic x- ray procedures. Unlike film, which is presently employed, these systems will not impose any inherent limitation on patient exposure since electronic amplification of signals will ensure that images can be displayed adequately for a very wide range of x-ray exposure. Based upon past experience end users will naturally request the highest quality image which can be produced by employing a higher level of exposure
