PROGRAMME ON COMBUSTION TECHNOLOGIES, HUMAN RESOURCES AND LARGE SCALE FACILITIES IN EU COUNTRIES

Cel

Following on from the first EUROFLAM programme, UWCC will make its large scale combustion facilities available to an expanded number of European technical university graduates already involved in industrial networks for periods of normally up to six months for advanced training. The experiences will include the study of a variety of gas and oil flames at an industrial scale (0.5 to 2 MW) using advanced experimental techniques including a three component laser velocimeter, laser sheet visualisation, phase Doppler optical sizer, plus various heat transfer measurements, gas analysis including chemical species characterisation. The facilities will be dedicated to this programme. Solid and liquid fuel combustion, gasification and pyrolysis including coal and biomass as feed stocks in a cyclone combustor of semi-industrial size as well as various commercial size rigs of fixed bed type. Various computational fluid dynamic software packages will be available on the university's extensive range of computer workstations, giving investigators the opportunity to update their experience on the mathematical simulation of flames/combustion and heat transfer processes. Analysis of experimental and modelling data will be facilitated for the investigators via seminars and modular short courses. All participants will be expected to give a major presentation at a symposium with the EUROFLAM participants from the co-operating institutes and external assessors present. Experience will be provided in a series of flexible modules of normally up to six months duration, allowing a total of 36 investigators over the 36 month long programme (12 per year). Quality of access will be enhanced via the requested RTD Access improvement programme and complemented by TMR fellowships. UWCC will provide/acquire all resources needed whilst existing external assessors will be retained and complemented by ENEL/IFRF staff.
