Flexible laser-assisted micro-engineering (FLAME)

Obiettivo

The growing marked of micro-system technology (MST) shows an increasing need for alterative manufacturing methods which can be applied to a larger variety of materials and geometry than is possible today. Laser micro- structure manufacture relies on direct ablation, a process whereby the short pulse of a laser remove a thin layer of material. The processes of drilling, cutting and 3-D micro-structuring can be realised by placing a huge number of single, laser induced micro-ablations. The aim of this project is the development of a novel, compact, laser based machine tool with an extreme high flexibility concerning the variety of materials and geometry, reached by the different laser types and the realisation of a flexible strategy. This type of machine will allow the economic manufacturing of prototypes and small batch sizes of high precision micro components. The efficiency of the novel machine and the developed strategies will be proved by the manufacturing of demonstrator devices.
