Research, development and evaluation of environmentally friendly in-mould coatings for thermo-composites

Cel

European legislation related to styrene emissions is having far reaching effects in the fibre-reinforced plastics (FRP) industry. This has driven the development of zero emission, environmentally friendly Thermo-composites, a combination of polypropylene and glass fibre, as a replacement for traditional resin based materials. A limitation to market acceptance of these materials has become apparent in the lack of a suitable zero emission in-mould surface finish, an equivalent to the gel coat. It is in the coating process that peak emissions occur and therefore styrene emissions still exist in the process. The overall objective of this project is to develop and evaluate a completely new solvent free in-mould coating addressing areas of application, bonding, long term environmental performance, surface finish and potential for recycling. This coating will have a thermo setting application but behave in a Thermo plastic way and will compliment the development of Thermo-composites to assist in a broader market acceptance of the material.
