The development of safe, watertight and fire-resistant maritime doors

Cel

Safety of human life at sea is an important and actual issue. Maritime safety regulations on fire resistance on water tightness are becoming stricter. This has resulted in relatively heavy and ponderous deck and cabin doors on ships and the introduction of new problems (e.g. jamming fingers in the closing mechanism, poor noise isolation, bad aesthetics). The shipbuilding sector expressed the need to develop a new type of door. Starting with concrete end-user requirements, with regards to ergonomic safety and aesthetical issues, the MARIDO project is aiming at the development of a new generation of maritime doors. Main goals are to increase the safety for passengers, to reduce weight and to develop land based applications. Promising new lightweight and fire resistant composite and hybrid materials are developed and integrated into a watertight and aesthetical design. The main result is a prototype door, which complies with end-user requirements, safety regulations and classifications.
