Rotorcraft handling, interactions and loads prediction (RHILP)

Objective

The RHILP project will investigate phenomena at low speed and provide aerodynamic models for Handling Qualities prediction and Flight Control System (FCS) design of Tilt-Rotors (T/R). The main objective is to limit risks related to T/R handling characteristics. Other objectives are to assess the risk of exceeding structural loads during manoeuvres and to define control features to prevent this risk. It is proposed to define relevant Handling Qualities criteria for T/Rs, to evidence control-critical and load-critical aspects of T/R flight, to define control solutions for load alleviation and stability augmentation. This will contribute to prepare the development of a future European T/R demonstrator by setting specifications for its FCS. The RHILP project will also bring a significant improvement in the European knowledge about rotor/airframe/ground interactions at low speed that could also profit to the safety of conventional helicopters.
