Cel Foreseen ResultsAn improvement of mathematical models apt to describe irrealistic mechanical behaviours of materials and their damage tolerance, for structural engineeering computations to analysis and design purposes. An improvement of the traditional monitoring technique combining existing and new instrumentation, as well as creating methods for diagnostic identification are aimed. The project is directed at solving two main problems. The first one concerns the characterization of the behaviour of non homogeneous materials, subject to different inputs. An optimal choice of proper experiments, employing mainly fiber optical measurements is planned for each type of materials in consideration in order to obtain its measured response to mechanical and eventually thermal actions. The solution of the corresponding direct problems is intended to describe the theoretical behaviour of the composite materials considered and to give their modeled responses. The employment of proper extremum seeking techniques is aimed at obtaining the optimal characteristics of the chosen material models, which make the material behaviour as close as possible to the experimentally measured one. Hopefully, a model will be chosen and its characteristics determined for an innovative polymer matrix composite material, using the experimental data for its response to coupled thermo-mechanical actions. The behaviour of fiber reinforced composites, that are of wide application for building different structures, will be studied accounting for the interface interaction, irrealistic deformations and damage, employing proper constitutive models, with the purpose of obtaining safety zones with respect to overall critical phenomena, such as ratchetting, alternating plasticity and plastic collapse. The second problem concern diagnosis of damage and defects in structures. Methods will be developed for diagnostic identification of cracks and damages in structural elements and concrete dams, on the basis of the data obtained by proper monitoring of the structures during their service lifetime. Thermal and mechanical data will be obtained for the structural response and it will be used in order to identify damage in brittle (e.g. concrete) and viscoelastic composite structures.
