Development of molecular vaccines and diagnostics for the control of tropical theileriosis

Objectif

The aim of the project is to develop a subunit vaccine and novel life-cycle stage specific diagnostics for T. annulated. Protective immunity involves effectors directed at 3 life-cycle stages (sporozoite, merozoite & schizont). Using a novel delivery system six available secreted schizont antigens plus an existing sporozoite & merozoite surface antigen will be tested for protective capacity. Previously noted synergism in protection between the sporozoite & merozoitesurface antigen will be further evaluated. Additional secreted schizont antigens will be isolated. Analysis of the immune response to these antigens will drive the design of further protection trials as will the role of antigenic diversity. Rapid, simple fondant serological diagnostics will be developed & used for epidemiological analysis and to assess the efficacy of novel subunit and existing live vaccines.
