Ways to enhance closedness of biological turnover of matter in man-made human life-support systems involving photosynthetic regeneration of human habitat

Objectif

Biological man-made highly closed life support systems (LSS) are of great interest for space and terrestrial applications. High closure of mass exchange in such systems is the most distinctive feature of future biological LSS of the new-generation intensively developed within the framework of international cooperation by different countries. The major goal of the project is to enhance closedness of matter turnover in biological LSS with higher plants by introducing soil-like substrate (SLS) - a new special heterotroph component. The soil-like substrate is the product of processing inedible plant wastes by mushrooms and vermiculture. The substrate is designed to replace the neutral substrate to grow higher plants in LSS, providing at the same time mineral elements for plants and utilizing plant wastes. An additional factor to enhance LSS closed ness is the energy-saving method of oxidizing plant wastes that defy biodegradation by hydrogen peroxide produced from the intrasystem water.

Main expected results:
1) optimisation of inner and outer factors of the environment by Harvest Index optimisation criterion (example of wheat and radish), cultivated on SLS under artificial conditions;
2) technological conditions of plant waste biodegradation on SLS combined with additional physical-chemical methods of oxidizing by hydrogen peroxide produced from the intrasystem water;
3) data bases on stoichiometry of biological cycles of major biogenes, their rates, compatibility, direction of matter flows, composition and variability of the microflora and;
4) construction of a mathematical model of the LSS under study involving quantitative description of plant waste utilization, dynamics of SLS properties, and major gaseous components. The studies to be conducted will provide a more penetrating insight into the mechanisms underlying the enhancement of higher plants LSS closed ness and scientifically substantiate requirements for the creation of such systems.
