Experimental and theoretical investigation of ion/molecular clusters in the subsonic turbulent flow

Cel

The Project is aimed at solving the problem of aircraft vortex wake visualization to enhance flight safety. The objective of the Proposal is to investigate ion and molecular clusters as possible agents, which might promote the solution of this problem. It is planned to develop theoretical conceptions of the cluster generation upon ions and to verify the derived theory in the wind tunnel experiments with well-controlled parameters of the air stream. Due attention will be paid to numerical simulation.

The essence of the experiment is as follows. In a wind tunnel flow, a corona discharge is to be realized, and a certain amount of ions per unit time is generated. The spatial distribution of the average gas-dynamic parameters and their turbulent fluctuation are measured. Millimetre backward oscillator technique and electrical probes are used to measure charged particle densities in several downstream cross-sections. Mass spectrum of the charged clusters is to be registered. During the experiments, flow velocity, air humidity and temperature may be varied, as well as turbulent characteristics and corona discharge voltage and current.

Theory of evolution of clusters (arisen on ions of different charge sign) in high frequency turbulent flow is to be derived and verified by comparison of its predictions with the experimental results obtained by the same team of investigators. By the way, the theory of an electric probe in the airflow carrying charged clusters ("heavy ions") is also to be developed.

Computational support of the Project will consist in: high accuracy numerical simulation of a turbulent flow past turbulizing grid with the perturbations cased by electrodes; several high-level turbulent models will be used as well as direct and large eddy simulations; numerical simulation of a turbulent slightly ionised flow carrying heavy ions about the probe; advection of a charge in the electric field using cluster kinetics equations.

A number of scientific teams from the leading Russian research institutes in the fields of aviation, physics and chemistry, computational mathematics, as well as representatives of universities are going to participate in the Project.
