Efficient source coding and related problems

Objectif

The overall objectives of the project are:

- to research/develop/implement and test efficient algorithms for basic
- problems of source coding, prediction and cryptography;

- to develop basic unifying principles which may be taken to form a common
- basis for substantial parts of source coding and related fields.

The overall objectives will be realized through a series of tasks of which a selection is:

- to construct codes for information sources with low computational complexity;

- to develop new schemes of reliable low-complexity cipher systems, based on recent results in cryptography and source coding;

- to develop quantum cryptographic systems based on entanglement manipulation and common randomness;

- to find lower bounds of precision for methods of prediction for general stochastic processes, and to construct asymptotically optimal classes of prediction algorithms;

- to compute single letter and entropy characterizations of rate regions for multi-user source coding;

- to apply the theory of identification for finding new solutions in prediction, alarm systems, and watermarking;

- to research the implications of a game theoretical approach in all fields of source coding and its applications where optimisation plays a key role.

Results in source coding, cryptography and related fields are widely used in modern computers and communication systems (internet, Mobil telephony, satellite networks). Justified by the potential applications and also because of their theoretical interest, the search for efficient methods is a principal problem of information theory and cryptography. Presently, many methods are used extensively in commercial systems. Any progress in basic understanding which leads to more efficient algorithms will, when implemented at the commercial scale, have even very significant economic implications. The investigations proposed will lead to a deeper understanding and demonstrate efficient new methods, thereby paving the way for implementations with increased efficiency in public-domain and commercial systems.

The project teams are leaders in their area and have, typically, developed their own way of approach to the body of problems to be addressed. By working together across graphical borders and scientific disciplines, the teams will reach a deeper coherent understanding for the benefit of future researchers and future work of implementation in telecommunications and other fields.
