A study of the asymmetry between matter and anti-matter (known as CP-violation) in the two pion decays of the neutral K-mesons

Objectif



One of the high priority experiments at CERN is the study of the phenomenon of the small asymmetry between matter and anti-matter (CP-violation) observed in neutral kaon decays. The experiment is a collaboration, known as NA48, between CERN and high-energy physics groups in Cagliari, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Ferrara, Mainz, Perugia, Pisa, Siegen, Torino, Vienna and at Dubna and Saclay. As well as being a fundamental problem within particle physics, the asymmetry is of great interest cosmologically, as was first noted by the late Andrei Sakharov, in explaining the dominance of matter over anti-matter observed in the Universe.

This project will establish even closer collaboration between Dubna and the participating institutes by providing computing and networking facilities in Dubna which are compatible with the rest of the collaboration, by facilitating exchange visits, and by enabling JINR physicists to participate fully in the experimental programme.

This challenging experiment will require the long-term use of complex computing tools which can be successfully exploited with the talent and manpower existing in the collaborating laboratories.

During the visits to MSI's the visiting fellows will participate in the advanced electronics projects and software developments related to the experimental program, Monte Carlo calculations and experimental data analysis using powerful computing facilities. These may also require additional resources (for example, advanced CAD packages and associated hardware and software) for use initially in MSI's, but eventually to be transferred or duplicated in Dubna.
