Research and development on fundamental properties and production techniques for fast scintillating crystals for use in high-energy physics experiments

Obiettivo

The three project participants have been collaborating for the past two years on a joint research project for the development of new, dense, high-speed scintillating crystals. These crystals will be used as the detector medium in the electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS experiment at the CERN.

Dense, scintillating crystals provide the best energy resolution for electromagnetically interacting particles of any technique used so far. High-performance scintillating crystal detectors have been used in particle physics experiments for decades with excellent results. Scintillating crystals are also used in several industrial applications, the two best known being positron emission tomography and oil-well logging.

The collaboration will concentrate on three specific new crystals: cerium fluoride (CeF3), lead fluoride (PbF2) and lead tungstate (PbWO4). The project includes growth techniques of the new crystals, theoretical understanding of the scintillation mechanisms of the crystals and tests in particle beams.
