A study of non-linear optical effects in liquid crystals, polymers and Langmuir-Blodgett films

Objective

Non-linear optical phenomena in liquid crystals doped with dyes possessing either positive or negative linear dichroism, doped polymers and Langmuir-Blodgett films consisting of amphiphilic dyes will be studied. Special attention will be paid to the investigation of the photo-induced molecular reorientation using cis-trans isomerisation of the dyes. Receiving dipolar structures during simultaneous application of an electric d.c. field will be quantitatively studied.

The main aims are to elucidate the physical mechanism controlling the reorientation and to create new materials for various applications: doped liquid crystals for optical data storage media; thin film materials for non-linear optical applications as, for example, second harmonic generation (doped polymers); and a monostable and bistable orientation of liquid crystals on solid substrates (Langmuir-Blodgett films).
