Dense cores in interstellar molecular clouds

Obiettivo

The aims of this project are to investigate the general properties of dense cores in interstellar molecular clouds which represent sites of active star formation, to model individual cores and to search for collapsing objects in these regions.

To achieve these goals improvements to the existing millimetre wave receivers used by the participating groups and the development of new millimetre and submillimetre wave receivers will be carried out. This equipment will be used for observations of an extended sample of dense molecular clouds and for detailed multiline studies of individual objects. The statistical properties of dense cores in regions of massive star formation, the dependence of the core parameters on external conditions in particular on the location in the Galaxy and correlations between physical parameters of the cores will be investigated. The numerical models of selected objects based on the multiline data will be constructed.

The expected results of these tasks are the increased capabilities of the millimetre and submillimetre wave astronomy in Russia and Ukraine. From the scientific measurements to be performed reliable estimates of the physical and chemical conditions in regions of active star formation and some other astronomical objects are expected.
