II - VI semiconductor quantum wells and superlattices

Objectif

This programme links six research teams to study semiconductor heterostructures based on compounds of the 'II - VI family' - specifically the tellurides of Cd, Zn, Mn and Mg. The heterostructures will be grown at Würzburg and Grenoble by molecular beam epitaxy. Optical and electrical measurements and theoretical studies will be done at St. Petersburg, Kiev and Ekaterinburg, and in Regensburg, Grenoble and Würzburg. The heterostructures to be studied consist of ultrathin layers of two different II - VI compounds such as CdTe and an alloy like CdMgTe. Both quantum wells (for example CdMgTe/CdTe/CdMgTe structures) and superlattices (a regular repeat structure) will be studied.

The project will explore the basic physical properties that result from the two-dimensional environment seen by electrons and holes confined in ultra-thin layers of the non-magnetic compounds CdTe, CdZnTe, CdMgTe and the semimagnetic compound CdMnTe. The project will also determine essential materials parameters on bulk samples of these compounds and of several other semimagnetic II - VI compounds (CdCoTe, ZnMnSe, HgFeSe, etc.).

The major topics to be studied are: effects of the very strong interaction of light with excitons (electron-hole pairs) in the II-VI materials, particularly as a function of superlattice parameters; large magnetic field dependence of the optical properties in structures incorporating the "semimagnetic semiconductor" CdMnTe; strain and piezoelectric effects; and electrical transport properties, particularly electron-scattering mechanisms, and magneto-transport.
