Degradation and stabilisation, and transport properties of polymeric composites

Objective

The significance of simultaneous study of degradation, stabilisation and transport properties of polymer composites is caused by the wide development of this kind of polymers, the search for chemical stabilisers and additives for polymeric materials, and different applications of polymer composites and blends.

The main goal of this research project is the development of the theory of simultaneous transport of water and low-molecular additives in filled polymers. The theoretical model will be checked experimentally through the study of kinetics of water sorption and diffusion of additives in several polymer composites.

This part will also develop an approach for controlled modification of polymers in order to govern the kinetics and rate of transport of water and low-molecular additives in the aforesaid kinds of polymers. The approach to such modification is expected to be a variation of initial concentration of fillers and/or additives in polymers.

The results of the research will be further applied to an evaluation of the physico-chemical mechanism of ageing of polyester-glass fibres composites due to different environmental factors.
