Dilepton as a probe of hadron properties in hot and dense nuclear matter

Exploitable results

The project was started in June 1994. It is being realised in a large European collaboration. The proposed set-up has been fully simulated on the basis of realistic particle production cross sections using the GEANT-computer code. The collaboration has been able to fully develop and to produce the detector units. Two out of the six HADES spectrometer sectors including read-out, data-acquisition and trigger electronics will be readily installed for commissioning in summer 1999. HADES will then form a two-arm spectrometer with a still limited acceptance but with an invariant mass resolution of about 8% at the rho/omega invariant mass region, already exceeding the properties of prior experiments. First physics will be measured in spring 2000 with particular interest to clarify the lepton production yield below the omega-mass. With ongoing detector production a 2% mass resolution will be reached in early 2000. Full completion of the spectrometer with full acceptance and ultimate mass resolution around 1% is foreseen for 2001.
