Physiological comparison of bacteria degrading polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in polluted soils

Ziel

The contamination of vast areas of western Europe and the former Soviet Union by a wide range of petrochemicals containing polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has posed a major ecological and health hazard. The extent of contamination is such that excavation and off-site treatment of the wastes is not feasible. Hence in situ bioremediation has become a favoured alternative.

Each of the laboratories involved in the project is carrying out ongoing research into the microbial degradation of PAHs. The aim of this project is to pool experience and microbial strains in further collaborations. A wide range of novel gram positive and gram negative bacteria from a variety of polluted sites are available in each laboratory in addition to well characterised strains.

The major objective will be to make a fundamental comparative study of the efficiency of PAH degradation by these isolates under standard conditions in each laboratory. This will provide information about the best possible bacteria with which to inoculate contaminated soils and some basic data for remediation engineers.
