Physics and evolution of compact dwarf galaxies

Obiettivo

Blue compact dwarf galaxies (BCDG) are now the focus of many studies because they experience intensive busts of star formation and are considered as evolutionary young galaxies.

This project intends to obtain new observational data on some important global parameters determining the physical state and evolutionary state of BCDGs and to compare these parameters with current models of chemical evolution which take into account selective loss of metals due to superwinds.

A large new sample of BCDGs from the second Byurakan (260 objects) and Case (150 objects) surveys, created by the authors, will be studied. The main goal of the project is to obtain the HI-fluxes and line-widths for the sample galaxies and CCD-images for getting the information on morphology and sizes. From the estimates of gas the total dynamical mass will be derived. Applying the results of optical spectroscopy completed for most of the sample BCDGs to derive O/H-abundances will create a good statistical base to check current models of the chemical evolution of dwarf galaxies.

Detailed multi-wavelength (UV, optics, IR, radio) studies will be done to those selected objects of more interest, to improve understanding of their evolutionary and dynamical state, including the role of dark matter halos in these galaxies.
