Studies of cyclotron wave-particle interactions in the magnetosphere and their effects

Exploitable results

The objective of this joint research was to investigate both experimentally and theoretically the cyclotron wave-particle interactions in the magnetosphere and plasmasphere which contain different kinds of hot plasma populations formed by numerous processes in the magnetosphere. This plasma interacts with various types of waves. VLF, ELF and certain ULF waves can be spontaneously generated via interactions between particles and waves. This project concentrated on: 1) Relationships between particle precipitation and VLF waves. 2) The indications of Earth-space coupling including the importance of man-made electromagnetic waves. 3) Theoretical formulation of the processes. Some of the main results were: - All the main triggering events, risers, hooks and fallers have been simulated. - Specific type of the localised energetic electron precipitation accompanied by the sharp gradient of trapped energetic electron flux was found. - A self-consistent model of precipitation has been developed. - The detailed computer analysis of auroral images with time resolution (0.04 s) allowed perfectly separate spatial and temporal variations in auroral luminosity. - Quantitative modelling of pulsating regimes of whistler-mode wave interactions with energetic electrons has been made. - A quantitative theory of the generation of ELF/VLF signals, which are caused by the ionosphere demodulation of modulated signals from broadcasting MF/HF transmitters, has been developed. - The kinetic thoery of cyclotron resonance interaction of a ducted whistler-mode wave with energetic electrons near the equatorial plane in the magnetosphere is developed. The project has led to 13 published international papers in main journals. Totally 21 different kinds of conference publications have been made and project participants have attended 13 different conferences and meetings. The created synergy between this project's participants is such that collaboration continues and further results are anticipated.
