Blood-biomaterial surface interaction and biocompatibility of artificial organ and assist devices

Ziel

Interaction of blood and tissues with the surface of biomaterials in artificial organs (polymers, active carbon) will be studied in vitro and in animal tests. Emphasis will be given to protein adsorption, cell adhesion, contact activation, complement system activation and factors altering these processes. Representative parameters for evaluation of biocompatibility of artificial materials will be selected and methods for modifying the surface of biomaterials to improve their biocompatibility will be developed.

To investigate the role of particular blood components in the blood-surface interaction, adsorbents with high affinity to certain proteins will be synthesised and applied for the extraction of corresponding substances from blood circulation.

The results of the experimental studies will be used for interpreting data obtained on patients, for biocompatibility assessment, and for the creation of biomaterials with high biocompatibility.
