Calibration of volume residual stress measurements by the neutron diffraction technique and applications

Exploitable results

In the framework of this project Neutron diffraction is proposed to use for the validation and calibration of portable non destructive techniques for stress measurement, like ultrasonic (US) and magnetic methods (MM). For tests and the calibration task typical specimens for different applications are used. At first cold rolled disks prepared for a forming process had been considered at the high resolution Fourier diffractometer at IBR2 in Dubna The combined influence of residual stress and texture of the cold rolling process was investigated and a calibration for magnetic and ultrasonic non-destructive techniques were performed. A clear effect of the residual stress state on the following forming process was found and the magnetic Barkhausen-noise measurements provides an effective way for a fast test of the quality of the disk A lot of work was done to improve the equipment at HRFD for precise strain measurement along different directions and even under external load. In collaboration with the project partners much efforts were undertaken at the HRFD to reach the state of art of precise stress determination at reasonably small gauge volumes This was demonstrated using a sample of shape welded ferritic layer on an austenitic tube.
