Objective This project is aimed at synthesizing and characterizing molecular magnetic materials based on nitroxide free radicals and/or their co-ordination compounds with transition metal ions. Since nitroxides have large spin densities distributed on peripheral atoms, intermolecular magnetic interactions may develop in the solid state leading to organic magnetic materials, or strongly coupled species may be obtained when these sites are co-ordinated to metal ions. Recently, ordering temperatures of ca. 20 K have been obtained for quasi-undimensional compounds in which interchain interactions are weak. Increasing the critical temperature is a prerequisite for possible applications in electronic, magnetic, photonic or photronic devices. Therefore, the future work in this field must be addressed to the synthesis of three-dimensional arrays of exchange coupled spin carriers. Strategy towards polydimensional materials involves functionalized nitroxides able to be bound to more than two metal ions. In this respect, both enaminoketone derivatives of 3-imidazoline nitroxides and imidazolyl substituted nitronyl and imino nitroxides will be particularly investigated. All the participating laboratories have complementary expertise. Among the NIS groups, the Institute of Organic Chemistry will develop the chemistry of 3-imidazoline nitroxides. The Institute of Inorganic Chemistry will investigate rare earth co-ordination chemistry of these ligands. The Laboratory of Polyspin Compounds will ensure co-ordination of the work in Novosibirsk. Nitronyl and imino nitroxide chemistry will be developed in Barcelona and Grenoble. Most of the physical measurements will be performed in Grenoble where outstanding facilities including neutron diffraction are available.
