Obiettivo SIMP is aimed at improving the information content, which can be inferred from multi-sensor satellite imagery of marine coastal areas. In particular, the project teams will benefit from the fact that marine surface films, which are often present in coastal areas, may enhance the signatures of hydrodynamic processes, such as plumes, internal waves, eddies, etc., on microwave, optical, and infrared imagery.Main objectives of SIMP are- To develop a robust methodology for identifying slick-related phenomena/processes through their surface signatures;- To improve the discrimination capabilities between slicks and other oceanic and atmospheric phenomena by taking into account information gained from satellite imagery quasi-simultaneously recorded at microwave, visible and IR wavelengths;- To determine the sensitivity of radar and optical signatures of marine surface films to variations of wind speed and wave field and, in particular, to hydrodynamic phenomena, like internal waves, eddies, and currents;- To investigate those physical mechanisms which are responsible for variations in slick visibility at different electromagnetic frequencies;- To develop and demonstrate an automatic algorithm for the detection and classification of marine surface films associated with hydrodynamic processes ion the coastal zone. This work is particularly relevant for the interpretation of data from sensors on the recently launched ENVISAT satellite. The main activities in the research program are :- Collection and systematic classification of existing remote sensing data of ocean surface films and corresponding additional information (in-situ data, weather charts, etc.);- Generation of a comprehensive database to facilitate further data analysis and interpretation for all project teams;- Implementation and improvement of existing models for the interaction of slicks and wind waves;- Laboratory (wind-wave tank) and field studies on the dynamics of marine slicks;- Development of automatic classification techniques, in particular for ENVISAT multi-sensor data.As an example for the applicability of the scientific work to be undertaken, successful execution of the project will result in a prototype Geographical Information System (GIS), that uses multi-sensor satellite images of the marine environment. Other main expected scientific results are:- Formulation of criteria for the identification and discrimination of radar signatures of various oceanic and atmospheric features;- Automatic algorithm for the detection and classification of marine surface films associated with hydrodynamic processes in the coastal zone. These results of SIMP will be particularly important for commercial exploitation by potential end users, including value-adding small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that are working in the field of marine remote sensing.
