Cel The project aims to develop the front-end electronics chain and the physics software tools for the PHOS electromagnetic calorimeter of the LHC ALICE experiment. In particular, the project will:- Carry out R&D, prototyping and tests of new front-end electronics, designed for avalanche photo-diode (APD) as photo detector, which satisfies the new extended physics requirements:-- An order of magnitude increase in dynamic range, corresponding to measuring energy deposition in the crystals in the range 10MeV to 100GeV. This will allow to fully exploit the PHOS physics potential for measurements of photons, neutral pions and etas up to 100 GeV;-- Possibility of time-of-flight measurements with resolution 2 ns or better. Time measurements, even with a rather modest accuracy of 2 ns, provide the possibility of reducing by one order of magnitude the most important contamination of the photon spectrum by soft antineutrons;-- Generation of PHOS triggers for the ALICE Trigger system. For pp runs it will typically supply L0 minimum bias triggers, for Pb-Pb high pT triggers;-- Possibility of APD bias regulation. The gain of an APD strongly depends on the bias high voltage, so implementation of bias regulation will result in a more stable detector, and is also a prerequisite for correct summing of energy signals for trigger generation;- To perform a series of beam tests with the existing large-scale 256 channel prototype of PHOS (INTAS 99-692 project), and to build a database of photon and hadron showers in PHOS. The most reliable method of estimation of photon and pi0 registration efficiency is the "test photon" method, when test clusters are superimposed onto real events and then reconstructed with the developed reconstruction software. To collect a complete set of clusters for this analysis is a main goal of these beam-tests;- To develop and to tune simulation, reconstruction and analysis software for photon and pi0 reconstruction and identification using MC simulations and experimental results obtained with the 256-channel PHOS prototype;- To perform MC simulations and to estimate the possibility of measurement of Bose-Einstein correlations of direct photons and possibility of jet tagging, high Pt photon/pi0 separation and measurement of isolated photon spectrum.
