Feasibility of Air borne Optical Detectors for Analysis of Traffic flow in Mega Cities.

Objective

The purpose of the project is to prepare the application concept for airborne traffic measurements system based on frame optical sensors for Mega Cities considering Moscow as an example. For this purpose a positions sensitive detector will be developed, which comprises an optical (visual or IR sensor) and the necessary software to extract the individual vehicle data from the images and, furthermore, an interface to the Moscow Traffic Management System. The development of the software to interpret the images and extract the individual vehicle data is an essential part of the detector development. A second issue which is essential for the usefulness of the detector is the development of an interface specification in order to enable feeding the extracted vehicle data in a standardized format into the Moscow Traffic Management System.
The project comprises the following specific parts:
•Analysis of the feasibilities and required positioning of airborne sensors for monitoring and managing traffic flow in Moscow.
•Specification of the basic airborne system parameters optimal for traffic data collection in Moscow.
•Development of algorithms and creation of the corresponding computer program for extracting a new type single vehicle data from the airborne optical images.
•Specification of the data interface and creation of the corresponding computer program required for integrating airborne traffic data into the traffic data bank and the traffic management system existing currently in Moscow.
•Specification of the details of digital road networks those are necessary for extracting traffic data from images and for the aggregating the extracted traffic data.
