A proposal for R&D to establish the limitations on the operation of the ATLAS end-cap calorimeters at high LHC luminosities

Objective

The main aim of the project is to verify that the ATLAS Endcap calorimeters will reliably operate at full SLHC luminosity. Once the calorimeter limits have been established, if this limits lie within the anticipated operating parameters of the SLHC, then a program to find methods to overcome these limits would naturally be required. These methods could include using alternate cryogenic liquids, high-pressure gases, or detector upgrades.
