Virtual Reality Surgery Training System

Rezultaty

The VRSUR system is a general-purpose virtual reality surgery simulator that is customisable for any patient’s anatomy, provided receipt of the appropriate medical images. The system runs on real-time on high-performance standard PCs and do not have very expensive requirements. The system provides tactile feedback for training motor skills and uses advanced mechanical models, such as Boundary Element Methods for a realistic simulation of the deformation of the organs. Camera position can be controlled by 3D localisers. The simulator comprises three modules: -Segmentation and organ extractor tool. -Scenario generator. -Surgery simulator. 3D medical images obtained from a CT or MRI scanner can be used for defining new scenarios. Images are pre-processed and segmented using the VRSUR segmentation module. Geometrical models can be extracted using the organ extractor tool. All these software tools can run either on a parallel computer or a standard PC, depending on the requirements and availability. The scenario can be built-up combining these models with synthetic models of vessels and tissues, which are difficult to extract from medical imaging. Dynamic properties and tissue textures are fixed on the scenario generator, choosing from a software library. Final scenarios can be loaded on the simulator. The high-performance parallel computing kernel of the simulator enables to perform the simulation on real-time basis. The interaction between the simulator and the user is performed by means of haptic devices, which provide a force-feedback of the reaction of the organs. Finally, the simulator provides the trainee with a report on the quality of the intervention.
