Exploitable results
The project aimed to resolve the problems caused by corrosion and scaling in the exploitation of both low and high enthalpy geothermal systems. By investigating the reaction mechanisms which control corrosion and scaling, a predictive model would also be developed, which would lead to the design of corrosion prevention processes for industrial applications.
Corrosion problems in commercial geothermal energy production systems can dramatically increase operating costs and thus reduce the profitability of the geothermal energy source. Severe corrosive problems can in certain circumstances also make the development of a geothermal energy field not viable.
