Intensification of batch chemical processes using integrated chemical reactors and heat exchangers

Cel

The objective of this project is to develop technologies for the design of combined unit, energy efficient, safe reactor-heat exchangers for fast, exothermic chemical reactions. This will enable classification of heat exchangers for their separate contribution to mixing and heat transfer, facilitating design for reaction purposes. Guidelines will be developed for the design of integrated reactor-heat exchangers for exothermic single phase reactions and recommendations made for the design of experiments and mathematical modelling of gas/liquid and solid/liquid reactions in reactors integrated with heat exchangers.

Reaction schemes, with specific kinetic and reaction pathways, will be investigated and selected to study macro- and microscale turbulent mixing and heat transfer of exothermic reacting liquid flows. Local temperature and velocity measurements will be combined with reaction studies to determine turbulent mixing and heat transfer rates in simulated heat exchanger passages, with and without reacting flows. Existing mathematical and numerical models, used to determine the micro-mixing rates of isothermal reacting flows, will be extended and adapted to exothermic reacting flows with heat production and transfer. Experimental results will be used to assist in the development of, and provide validations for, these models.
