Objective THE FINAL AIM OF THIS WORK IS THE APPLICATION OF LASER BASED SPECTROSCOPIC TECHNIQUES FOR SENSITIVE METAL AND ALLOYS CHARACTERIZATION IN COMPLEX ENVIRONMENTS. EMPHASIS WILL BE LAID TO THE ADAPTATION OF THESE TECHNIQUES FOR THE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF A LABORATORY PROTOTYPE OF A LASER PLASMA SPECTROMETER, WHICH WILL BE CAPABLE OF MULTIELEMENT ANALYSIS. DURING THIS PROJECT FOUR MAJOR TASKS WILL BE PERFORMED: A) LASER PLASMA INVESTIGATION INCLUDES STUDIES OF THE LASER PRODUCED PLASMAS IN DIFFERENT TYPES OF MATERIALS. B) LASER PLASMA SPECTRA: CHARACTERISTIC PLASMA EMISSION SPECTRA WILL BE DETERMINED BY RCC, FOR PURE METALS AND STANDARD ALLOYS TARGETS BY USING OPTICAL MULTICANNEL ANALYSIS. THE POSSIBILITY FOR QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS WILL BE ASSESSED. GATING TECHNIQUES AND PLASMA PROBING IN TWO STEPS WILL BE TRIED OUT. C) FIELD INVESTIGATIONS: SELECTED METALS (FE, ZU, PB, MG, AL, CU, CR, NI) WILL BE DETERMINED IN ALLOYS OF KNOWN COMPOSITION AND IN SCRAPS BY USING LASER PLASMA SPECTROSCOPY. D) DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING OF A LABORATORY PROTOTYPE: SPECTROSCOPIC TECHNIQUES BASED ON LASER PRODUCED PLASMA EMISSION ARE EXPECTED TO SIMPLIFY COMPLEX PROCEDURES OF CHARACTERIZATION OF ALLOYS IN COMPLEX SCRAPS AND RESIDUES. THE INFLUENCE OF PLASMA PARAMETERS TO THE QUALITY OF THE ANALYTICAL INFORMATION WILL BE DETERMINED.
