A Cooperative European Investigation of the North-East Atlantic Water Mass Circulation

Objective

Neutrally buoyant floats will be used to investigate the circulation at the levels (typically 1000m and 1800m) of the Mediterranean and Labrador Sea water masses in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean between 30 and 600N and between the west European continental margin and 300W. The floats will be acoustically tracked and will be of two types - ALFOS (in which acoustic tracking data is relayed back via satellite at regular intervals throughout the float life) and RAFOS (in which tracking data are only retrieved at the end of the float life)
The float data will be used to study possible interactions between the circulation at the two float levels and to compute the eddy statistics of the circulation in the area. The results will be compared with similar statistics computed from state-of-the art ocean circulation models of the North Atlantic.
