HARVESTING AND PRIMARY PREPARATION OF SMALL TREES

Objective



THE VOLUME AVAILABLE FROM FIRST THINNINGS IN HARDWOOD AND SOFTWOOD STANDS REPRESENTS A LARGE AND RENEWABLE FIBRE POTENTIAL FOR THE PULP AND PARTICLE BOARD INDUSTRIES AND ENERGY CONSUMERS IN THE COMMUNITY COUNTRIES. IN DENMARK ALONE THE POTENTIAL ANNUAL VOLUME IS APPROX. 560,000 M3 (STEMS, TOPS AND BRANCHES). HERE AS WELL AS IN ALL OTHER MEMBER STATES THE UNEXPLOITED VOLUMES FROM THINNINGS ARE FOUND MAINLY IN THE MINOR FOREST PROPERTIES. THEREFORE THE INTENSIFICATION OF OPTIMAL THINNING REGIMES MAY NOT ONLY ENHANCE THE FIBRE SUPPLY BUT MAY ALSO CONTRIBUTE SIGNIFICANTLY TO ACHIEVING A VALUABLE SAWLOG PRODUCTION. RATIONAL MACHINERY AND METHODS FOR THE FIRST THINNINGS IN SMALL-SCALE FORESTRY ARE SCARCE.

HENCE THE PROJECT WILL BE AIMED AT DEVELOPING MACHINERY AND METHODS THAT, BY VIRTUE OF THEIR SIMPLE CONSTRUCTION AND LOW INVESTMENT LEVEL, MAY BE WELL SUITED FOR OWNERS OF THE NUMEROUS MINOR FOREST PROPERTIES WHERE THE PREDOMINANT POWER SOURCE IS THE AGRICULTURAL TRACTOR. AT THE SAME TIME THE RESEARCH WORK WILL BE DIRECTED TOWARDS THE DEVELOPMENT OF A TECHNOLOGY THAT WILL ALLOW THE FOREST OWNER TO QUICKLY SWITCH HIS PRODUCTION FROM ONE QUALITY OF INDUSTRIAL WOOD TO ANOTHER, OR TO ENERGY QUALITY WOOD. ONE DEMAND THAT MUST BE MET BY THE NEW TECHNOLOGY IS THEREFORE THAT THE FOREST OWNER SHOULD BE ABLE TO PRODUCE, BY USING ONE AND THE SAME MACHINE, HIGH-QUALITY PULP CHIPS (WHITE CHIPS NOT CONTAINING BARK AND BRANCHES) AND ENERGY CHIPS (GREEN CHIPS CONTAINING BARK AND BRANCHES). THIS FLEXIBILITY MAY ENABLE THE FOREST OWNER TO PRODUCE HIS OWN THINNING CHIPS AND SELL THE QUALITIES THAT REPRESENT THE GREATEST PROFITABILITY AT THE TIME.

THE PROJECT IS DIVIDED INTO TWO STAGES:

STAGE I : DEVELOPMENT AND LABORATORY TESTING OF THE NEW TECHNOLOGY.

STAGE II : CONSTRUCTION OF A TEST MODEL AND TESTING IT IN THE FOREST.
