INVESTIGATION OF SULFIDE MINERALISATION AND HYDROTHERMAL ALTERATIONS IN DRILL-HOLE CY-2, CYPRUS CRUSTAL STUDY PROJECT.

Objective



1) MINERALOGICAL AND GEOCHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF MASSIVE AND STOCKWORK MINERALISATION.
2) STRUCTURE AND TTRACE ELEMENT CONTENTS OF ORE MINERALS
3) INTENSITY AND VARIATIONS OF HOST-ROCK ALTERNATION AS A TOOL FOR EXPLORATION.

THE TROODOS OPHIOLITE COMPLEX HAS BEEN SELECTED BY THE INTERNATIONAL CRUSTAL RESEARCH DRILLING GROUP (ICRDG) FOR DRILLING A 5.500 M SEQUENCE OF OCEANIC CRUST. BASALTIC PILLOW LAVAS (LAYER 2) OF THIS SEQUENCE ARE ASSOCIATED WITH SULFIDE MINERALISATION OF ECONOMIC INTEREST. SIMILAR DEPOSITS HAVE RECENTLY BEEN DISCOVERED AT THE EAST PACIFIC RISE AND IN THE RED SEA.

MINERALOGICAL AND GEOCHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF SULFIDE MINERALISATION AND HYDROTHERMAL ALTERNATION WILL BE INVESTIGATED IN CORE MATERIAL OF THE 1000 M BOREHOLE CY-2 ("ORE DEPOSIT SECTION"). SULFIDE COMPOSITION AND VARIATION OF MASSIVE ORE, STOCKWORK AND "ROOT"-ZONES OF THE MINERALISATION WILL BE THE SUBJECT OF MICROSCOPICAL, MOCROANALYTICAL AND GEOCHEMICAL STUDIES. STRUCTURE, INTERGROWTH PATTERNS AND PRECIOUS METAL CONTENT (AU, AG) OF ORE MINERALS ARE OF SPECIAL INTEREST.

ALTERNATION MINERALS WILL BE IDENTIFIED BY X-RAY DIFFRACTION METHODS. THE RELATION-SHIP OF SULFIDE MINERALISATION AND HOST-ROCK ALTERNATION AS WELL AS THE DISTRIBUTION OF SECONDARY MINERALS WILL BE USED TO DEVELOP GENTIC MODELS OF ORE FORMATION. OBTAINED DATA WILL BE COMPARED WITH RESULTS OF SHALLOW EXPLORATION BORENTHOLES AND OPEN PIT INVESTIGATIONS.

A STUDY OF THE DISTRIBUTION OF METALS AND OTHER ELEMENTS IN THE SOURCE ROCK AND IN THE STOCKWORK ZONE WILL BE CARRIED OUT TO UNDERSTAND THE POSSIBLE LEACHING PROCESS OF WATER-ROCK INTERACTION. PRECIPITATION OF SULFIDES CONTAINING PRECIOUS METALS WITHIN THE STOCKWORK MAY BE IMPORTANT FOR THE FORMATION OF LOW-GRADE BUT LARGE SCALE ORE BODIES.

THE APPLICABILITY OF PATHFINDER ELEMENTS OR ALTERATION PATTERNS AS GUIDES FOR EXPLORATION OF "CYPRUS TYPE" SULFIDE DEPOSITS IN OPHIOLITE AREAS WILL BE STUDIED.
