MARINE GEOLOGICAL RESEARCH FOR PLACER DEPOSITS IN THE OFFSHORE AREAS OF EASTERN MACEDONIA AND THRAKI, N. GREECE.

TO STUDY THE MARINE GEOLOGY AND PALEOGEOGRAPHY OF THE OFFSHORE AREAS IN ORDER TO LOCATE PLACER DEPOSITS. PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATIONS INDICATE THE EXISTENCE OF HEAVY MINERALS CONCENTRATION CARRIED BY SEVERAL RIVERS (STRYMON,NESTOS, ETC). IN THE OFFSHORE AREAS OF E. MACEDONIA AND THRAKI.THE MAIN AIM OF THE RESEARCH IS TO DEVELOP AN EXPLORATION TECHNIQUE FOR LOCATING PLACER DEPOSITS IN THESE AREAS COVERING 5,500 KM2.

I.G.M.E. HAS ALREASY COLLECTED THE SAMPLES AND CORES AND CARRIED OUT THE SEISMIC AND BATHYMETRIC PROFILES REQUIRED FOR THE FIRST PHASES.

THE RESEARCH IS DIVIDED INTO THREE PHASES:

1ST PHASE
THE ELABORATION OF THE EXISTING DATA WILL BE CARRIED OUT. THE RESULTS OF THE ABOVE DATA WILL SHOW THE MORPHOLOGY OF THE AREA AS WELL AS ITS SEDIMENT DISTRIBUTION AND PALEOGEOGRAPHY. FROM THESE RESULTS, IT WILL BE POSSIBLE TO OUTLINE AREAS WITH HINGHER-THAN-AVERAGE CONTENT IN DARK MINERALS.

2ED PHASE
DURING THIS PHASE, THE AREA WILL BE SURVEYED BY USING A UNIBOOM SEISMIC PROFILING SYSTEM GIVING A BETTER PENETRATION IN THE SANDY SEA BOTTOM. THE WORK WILL BE CONCENTRATED IN AREAS WITH HIGH MINERAL CONTENT WHERE ADDITIONAL SAMPLING AND CORING WILL BE EXECUTED. THE COMPARISON BETWEEN THE 3,5 KHZ SEISMIC PROFILES AND THOSE OF THE UNIBOOM WILL HELP TO UNDERSTAND BETTER THE PALEOGEOGRAPHIC CONFIGURATION OF THE AREA. ON THE OTHER HAND, THEHE EXAMINATION OF THE COLLECTED SAMPLES AND CORES WILL HELP TO LOCATE AREAS FOR DRILLING SITES OF THE NEXT (THIRD) PHASE. DATA COLLECTION WILL TAKE ABOUT 7 MONTHS.

3D PHASE
DRILLING WILL BE DONE IN SELECTED AREAS ON THE BASIS OF THE RESULTS OF THE SECOND PHASE. THE DRILLING WILL BE CARRIED OUT EITHER BY A VIBRO TYPE CORER OR FROM A DRILLING PLATFORM. THE EXAMINATION OF THESE CORES WILL ALLOW US TO HAVE THE REQUIRED DATA FOR ESTIMATING THE QUALITY AND THE QUANTITY OF EVENTUAL PLACER DEPOSITS AS WELL AS THEIR LATERAL EXTENT.

FOR THE REALISATION OF THE FIELD WORK A TRAWLER TYPE SHIP WILL BE USED. FIELD WORK FOLLOWED BY LABORATORY ANALYSES MUST OUTLINE THE MOST FAVOURABLR AREAS FOR PLACER DEPOSITS.

COLLABORATION IS FORESEEN WITH THE GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF BELGIUM AND THE IMPERIAL COLLEGE, LONDON.
