CHARACTERIZATION AND PROPERTIES OF FINISHED CERAMIC PRODUCTS OBTAINED BY CLAY RAW MATERIALS.

Objective

TO HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDINGKNOWLEDGE OF THE CHARACTERISTICS AND PERFORMANCESOF CERAMICS IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE BETTER QUALITY PRODUCTS AND A MORE PROFITABLE USE OF CLAYS.

A REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLING OF FINISHED CERAMIC PRODUCTS, OBTAINED BY DIFFERENT CLAY RAW MATERIALS, WILL BE MADE TO DETERMINE THEIR PHYSICAL PROPERTIES.
THE MICRO-STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF FIRED CLAY PRODUCTS WILL BE INVESTIGATED BY MEANS OF X-RAY DIFFRACTION, FLUORESCENCE SPECTROMETRY, OPTICAL AND ELECTRON MICROSCOPY, ETC.

THE CHAMICAL/PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS WILL BE DETERMINED AND COMPARED TO STABLISHED "STANDARDS". THIS, TOGETHER WITH COMPLEMENTARY DATA FURNISHED BY OTHER INSTITUTES WILL ALLOW A COMPLETE SPECIFICATION OF THE MATERIALS TO BE STABLISHED. SUCH A SPECIFICATION CORRELATED WITH CHEMICAL AND MINERALOGICAL COMPOSITION OF PRIMARY RAW MATERIALS AND THE FABRICATION PROCESSES WILL LEAD TO MORE SCIENTIFIC CHOICE OF MATERIAL FOR A PARTICULAR APPLICATION.

KUL (LOUVAIN, BELGIUM), BCRA (STOKE-ON-TRENT, UK) AND INSTITUT FUER WERKSTOFFWISSENSCHAFTEN (ERLANGEN, FRG) WILL COLLABORATE ON VARIOUS PARTS OF THE PROJECT.
