Objective TO OBTAIN A BETTER SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE SHAPING PROCESS WITH SLIPS AND PASTES AND THE ROLE PLAYED BY CLAY MINERALS AND IMPURITIES IN CLAYS. IN THE FIRST PHASE, PHYSICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF DIFFERENT CLAYS WILL BE CARRIED OUT BY GRANULOMETRY, SEM, RADIO-CRYSTALLOGRAPHY AND POROSITY MEASUREMENTS. THESE MEASUREMENTS WILL BE MADE ON DRY MATERIALS AT 110C. DURING THE SECOND PHASE, ELECTROLYTICAL STUDIES OF THE CLAY-SOLUTION SYSTEM WILL BE MADE. THIS WILL INCLUDE CHARACTERIZATION OF THE AQUEOUS INTERFACE, AND AN ELECTROCHEMICAL AND RHEOLOGICAL STUDY ON THE CLAY PASTES AND SUSPENSIONS. SHAPING STUDIES INCLUDING CASTING, EXTRUSION AND PRESSING WILL FORM THE MAJOR PART OF THE THIRD PHASE. IN PARTICULAR, THE CLASSICAL METHODS OF CASTING WILL BE COMPARED WITH THE NEW ELECTRO-FORMING TECHNIQUES DEVELOPED BY PROF. VANDER POORTEN. THE ELASTIC-PLASTICITY AND THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF THE PASTES WILL BE CARRIED OUT BY EXTRUSION AND PRESSING TESTS RESPECTIVELY. IN THE FINAL PHASE, THE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE FUNDAMENTAL PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF THE CLAY-BASED MINERALS AND THEIR APTITUDE TO THE VARIOUS WET SHAPING MODES WILL BE ESTABLISHED. THIS RESEARCH PROJECT IS PART OF A COMMON PROGRAMME THAT HAS BEEN DRAWN UP BY SEVERAL WELL-EQUIPPED RESEARCH CENTRES IN THE COMMUNITY TO WORK ON A CERTAIN NUMBER OF RAW MATERIALS.
