DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH-GRADE RAW-MATERIAL-EFFICIENT RARE-EARTH TRANSITION METAL COMPOUNDS.

Ziel

THE PROPOSED RESEARCH AIMS AT THE DEVELOPMENT OF PERMANENT MAGNETS BASED ON THE SM2CO17 COMPOUND BUT CONTAINING LESS SM AND CO THAN MORE TRADITIONAL MAGNETS OF THIS TYPE. THESE NEW-TYPE MAGNETS ARE INTENDED TO HAVE A HIGHER STRENGTH AND A BETTER STABILITY LEVEL THAN THOSE PRESENTLY AVAILABLE.

DEVELOPMENT OF STABLE, HOGH-STRENGTH SM-CO-BASED PERMANENT MAGNETS WITH THE QUANTITIES OF SM AND CO REDUCED BY THE SUBSTITUTION OF OTHER RARE-EARTH AND TRANSITION METALS.

THIS WILL BE ACHIEVED BY THE PARTIAL SUBSTITUTION OF SAMARIUM AND COBALT BY DIFFERENT RARE-EARTH AND TRANSITION METALS AND BY THE VARIATION AND ADAPTION OF THE PROCESSING PARAMETERS SUCH AS MILLING, PRESSING, SINTERING AND POSTSINTERING ANNEALING.

THE SPECIMENS WILL BE CHARACTERIZED BY MAGNETIC, METALLOGRAPHIC, X-RAY AND ELECTRON MICROSCOPIC MEASUREMENTS. IT IS INTENDED THAT THIS DEVELOPMENT WILL RESULT IN MORE COMPACT, HIGHER-STRENGTH PERMANENT MAGNETIC DEVICES SUCH AS THOSE USED IN MOTORS, GENERATORS, COUPLINGS, BEARING AND HOLDERS.

OTHER DIVISIONS WITHIN THE KRUPP GROUP WILL BE CALLED UPON TO GIVE SUPPORT IN THIS PROJECT WHEN NECESSARY.
